Purity Moosic City 5K is in the books. Sara finished 2nd in her age group and was the 24th female overall out of 420+ participants…all of this on a leg that she strained earlier in the week. It was a lot of fun to run and finish with her. So proud. #family #running

Sara finished 27th overall out of girls from seven schools in the HVAC Middle School Cross Country Championships yesterday with Lipscomb Academy. It was a nasty hot and humid afternoon, but all of the girls ran hard. So proud of Sara on how far she’s come in such a short time of running. A big thanks to Coach C for all his time and dedication working with these young ladies. #family #running

Just finished a 5.25-mile run on Belle Meade Boulevard with this cutie…another record for her. A few weeks ago Sara said there was no way she would be able to run the Boulevard Bolt on Thanksgiving, and today we ran the whole course plus a little extra. She is working so hard. Earlier today I finished a hilly 8.5-mile run with Brian in Percy Warner and the Boulevard. Perfect weather for being outside. #family #running

Two drowned rats after a 5-mile run in the driving rain, some of it in ankle-deep water…Sara’s longest run yet! Before that I got in 11.5 miles with Brian and now time to get cleaned up and ready for Kate’s performance with the Williamson County Community Band. #family #running

At today’s cross-country meet, Sara faced challenging conditions where almost all of our runners were 1 to 3 minutes off of their PR. It was hot, humid, and windy in the first mile and raining and windy in the second mile. She still gave it her absolute best, and I am very proud of the way she handled the adversity. She was disappointed with her finish time but never got too hard on herself. She is determined to keep working. That’s my girl!! #running #family

So what do you do when your training plan calls for a 30 minute run but your schedule is packed from morning until night? You slap on a headlamp and a reflective vest at 8:30pm and you get it done! This girl is working hard! #family #running

Reflections on 9/11

Like most of us that were alive during 9/11, I’ve spent a lot of time this week reflecting on the events of that day, the lives lost, and of a world forever changed. I had never been to New York when the twin towers stood, but having been there dozens of times since 2001, it has become my favorite city in the world. I ended up working a lot in lower Manhattan and even in an office that overlooked Ground Zero, so I was able to watch the site being rebuilt all the way up until the memorial opened and One World Trade Center was completed. I snapped this first picture of the cross at Ground Zero during my first trip to New York in the fall of 2002 with Olivia and my parents (with a film camera). Years later it was good to see that it has been preserved in the 9/11 museum. While this cross can clearly be seen as a reminder of the earthly events that happened, it is also a reminder to me that no matter what happens on this earth we have a citizenship in heaven (Phil 3:20) that was made possible by the love that God demonstrated toward us in sacrificing His Son on the cross of Calvary, and no force in heaven or on earth can separate us from that love (Rom 8:31-39).

Another middle school cross country meet is in the books, and Sara set another 2-mile personal record with a finish time of 16:22, which is 55 seconds better than her time last week. So proud of how hard she is working, and it has been a blast watching her grow and get stronger in the sport that I love! Go Sara!! #family #running #crosscountry

The “ABCs” of Acts – Pleasant View Church of Christ

The “ABCs” of Acts – Pleasant View Church of Christ
Weekly Adult Bible Class
Beginning Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 7:00pm
Will also live stream weekly on Facebook Live via the link above

abc_blocksI will be updating this post below with links to PDF copies of the handouts and notes for the class each week as we move to a new chapter in Acts of Apostles.

When I was a student at Lipscomb University back in the mid 90s, Dr. Gerald Fulks, one of the Finance/Economics professors, taught a class every semester on personal evangelism. During that class, he made the argument that it was essential to have a good recollection of the main ideas of the book of Acts when attempting to teach someone God’s plan of salvation.

In keeping with this, Dr. Fulks presented the concept of the ABC Outline as a tool for remembering the key points of each chapter. It works by matching the sequence of the alphabet with the sequence of each chapter (i.e. Chapter 1 = A, Chapter 2 = B, and so on). For each chapter, we were encouraged to come up with a keyword or phrase that captures the main idea, and also begins with the designated letter.

This has been a powerful tool for me, and is something that I have shared with a number of classes through the years. I’ve always challenged my students to come up with their own keywords, and the first link below is to a worksheet for creating your own ABC outline.

During this class we will attempt to cover a chapter of Acts of Apostles each week and then the following week we will ask for suggestions on keywords or phrases that go along with that chapter. By doing this, each student will be able create their own, customized outline. Handouts and notes for each chapter will be posted below as they are available along with live stream recordings from the class.

Sara’s first Middle School Cross Country meet for @lipscombacademy was a success, and we are very proud! She started off training back in May with absolutely no running base and today she ran the 2-mile course at Vaughn’s Gap in 17 minutes 45 seconds. This put her 26th overall among girls from 8 different schools, and was 1 minute 15 seconds faster than her time in practice 2 weeks ago. Excited to see where she goes from here. #family #running
