It isn’t pretty, but today was the first day I’ve picked up a guitar since having four screws surgically inserted into my left hand to repair multiple fractures and a torn ligament. My flexibility is not fully back, but this is a riff from my favorite guitarist that I could still (sorta) play. Anyone know what it is?

In August 2013, one of my best friends passed away suddenly. His name was Kerry Anderson, and he owned a LOT of guitars. A few months after his death, his parents, Neil and Glenda Anderson, gave me one of his guitars. Prior to that day, I don’t think I had ever even held a guitar, much less played one. I treasured the gift greatly and promised them that I would learn to play.
Well, tonight I played the guitar in public for the first time in my life. It was at the Bellevue Church of Christ Talent Show, and I participated to honor Kerry and the awesome gift from Neil and Glenda. I decided to do a medley of guitar riffs from Jack White since he is my favorite modern guitar player, and because I’ve spent a lot of time practicing songs from The White Stripes and his solo work.
This was the most nervous I have been in a LONG time, and my hands where shaking the whole time. However, I made it through it, and am mostly pleased with how it went. Thanks for everyone for their kind words after the show.
Here’s a rundown of the songs in the medley:
- Sixteen Saltines
- Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
- Fell In Love With a Girl
- Blue Orchid
- Seven Nation Army
- Hardest Button to Button
- Icky Thump
